Box of Style: My Thoughts On A Luxury Subscription Box
Subscription boxes. I keep seeing them all over Facebook. You know the ones, “FabFitFun”, “BabyGuyNYC”, “Ipsy”, along with many others. Other than a few BabyGuyNYC boxes (which I don’t subscribe to, I purchased them individually) I don’t have much experience with subscription boxes. With a young family, I tend to be a little risk adverse when it comes to purchasing things sight unseen (usually with a subscription box, you pay ahead and the contents of the box is a surprise). However, with an interest in fashion and personal style, when I heard that stylist Rachel Zoe had come out with a subscription style box, I knew I wanted to check it out. Luckily for me, there really wasn’t much risk involved. Since I purchased the box towards the end of their summer subscription cycle, I not only got to use a $25 coupon code, but more importantly, I already knew what was in the box. I’ll fess up, I watched an unboxing video (or two) before dropping the $75 (with the coupon code).
A little info on the box. If you get a seasonal membership, each box is $99.99, four times a year. If you decide on a yearly membership, its $349.99, bringing the cost per box down to a little over $87, four times a year and both have free shipping. They claim each box contains over $400 in fashion and beauty items, so if thats true, the boxes end up being a pretty good value. For more information on the box, the subscription process, and to see pictures/videos of the contents in previous boxes, you can check out their website here.
The box arrived the day before we left for Florida. Perfect timing! I packed everything in my suitcase and can honestly say every item was used. Now, before I show you the goods, I need to let you guys know that this box is no longer available. I still think that by sharing this, I can give you guys my honest opinion of the quality and value of their boxes (and no, this is not a sponsored post). They are currently selling their Fall themed box, and you can check out the contents of that particular box on their website (with the link I provided earlier). Now on to the fun stuff!
The box itself is really nice and sturdy, with magnetic closures. Opening the box, you’re greeted with “Hello Gorgeous” (who doesn’t like that?!) and a booklet detailing the items inside.
Tearing through the first layer of tissue paper, the individually wrapped items come into view. I’m pretty impressed by the presentation of this box.
The first item I opened was this cute necklace. It’s dainty and pretty, perfect for layering.
Next, these Raen sunglasses, which I LOVE. I used them everyday when we were in Florida. Right above them, on either side of the necklace, are two beauty items. I was so excited when I heard that there were not one, but two full-sized Beauty Counter products in this box. I’d been wanting to try the brand out for a while, but wanted to use up what I already had before committing to new products (this brand is on the pricier side). They are known for their safe cosmetics, free of all the yucky stuff. On the left, in the blue box, is the Color Pinch Cream Blusher in Hibiscus. On the right, is their Protect Stick Sunscreen.
Now, I have to be honest, I’m not super into the “pom” trend of this past Spring/Summer. As cute as they are, I just dont see this colorful trend having a long shelf life (although you could always rock it on vacation to a beach locale or cruise, and fit right in!). However, the little black poms on this Sole Society hat are much more subtle that their colorful cousins and add a nice amount of interest to an basic, but cute, hat. I wore it almost everyday at the parks!
Last but not least, this lovely, floral, Helena Quinn kimono. It is so soft and can be styled a ton of different ways. It’s perfect over a swim suit, with some high-waisted shorts and a white tee, or even dressed up with slacks and and a camisole. This print was exclusive to Box of Style, but they have a similar one available here.
So at (typically) $100, do I think this luxury subscription box is worth it? Doing a little research, I looked up the individual items online, across several different websites, to see their actual value. I was pleasantly surprised to see that not only were they worth what was claimed, but the total value of the box was $486.95 (that doesn’t include taxes, and I didn’t include resale websites)! Not bad!
I absolutely find the value to be there (in this particular box). I cancelled my subscription after ordering the box, because like I mentioned earlier, at $100 per box, not knowing if I’m going to like the contents, makes me a little twitchy. Having said that, it seems like the quality of these boxes are pretty consistent. These would make an amazing gift for the style-inclined person in your life, or can even be seperated into individual gifts. Canceling the subscription was pretty straight forward. I used their chat function to clarify the process, then sent them a message (through the website). Within a day or two they sent me an email confirming my cancellation. Super easy. At the end of the day, I’d definitely purchase another Box of Style, although I do wish you could buy them individually without a subscription.
I hope you enjoyed checking out this Summer Box of Style as much as I did! As always friends, thank you for reading! ?~Lyssa
